Eat for Health

*

Start at an Early Age

  • Children today are eating too much saturated fat, sugar and salt.
  • Many children rarely eat fruit and vegetables.
  • Children today are more likely to be overweight and are at greater risk of heart disease and cancer in later life because of their poor diet.
  • Through their advertising campaigns, food manufacturers encourage children to eat high fat, high salt, and high sugar foods.

Be Aware!

Added Sugar: Watch out for so called 'nutritious' cereals, they can be full of sugar!
Tip: Read the Nutrition Information panel. Avoid cereals that have 10g per 100g or more of sugar.

Added Entertainment: Cartoon characters are often used on food packaging to entice children. Often these foods are high in fat, sugar, salt and additives.
Tip: When shopping, don't ask children to choose products themselves. They will go for the picture that appeals to them most.

Added Fat: Even products marketed as "healthy" can have added fat. Remember, if a label reads 90% Fat Free - The product contains 10% Fat!
Tip: To get the true facts, always read the Nutritional Information panels on food packages.

  • Sweets should only be treats! Limit your child's consumption of sweets to once a week.
  • Sweets should be eaten after a meal in order to decrease their effect on teeth
