Good food labelling
can help us make healthier choices. But don't be fooled!
Always read the nutrition information on food packing for
the full story.
Low Fat:
Bold claims on the front of packages
don't always give you the whole picture.
Be sure to read the nutrition information.
Low fat food can be high in sugar.
Flavour:
Cheese flavour crisps contain cheese,
right?
Wrong! Only if they are described as cheese flavoured
must they contain real cheese.
Dodgy words:
Words such as 'traditional', 'farmhouse',
'original' and 'wholesome' are used to persuade us to
buy products.
These are meaningless without further explanation.
These products may contain additives.
Heart Healthy:
Some food companies claim that the
products can keep you healthy.
Rarely is there sufficient evidence to justify the claims
Remember, no single food can turn a poor diet into a healthy
one.
Juice? Drinks:
Juice drinks can contain as little
as 5% juice.
Many juice drinks contain more water and sugar than
juice.
They may also contain flavouring, sweeteners and colouring.
