  * Why encourage smoke free eating? It's a good time?

There have been considerable changes in attitude amongst the public to eating in an atmosphere polluted with second-hand smoke. In a recent survey published by the Office for National Statistics in July 2003, 88% of people asked said they would like to see restrictions in place on smoking when they were eating. There are also increasing concerns about passive smoking and its affect on health.

  * What will be on the Totally Smoke Free Eating Website?

The website will publicise businesses who can offer either:

  • Smoke free eating in a room completely separated by a closed door from
other areas where there may be smoking or
  • Totally smoke free premises (no smoking permitted in any part of the
    building and business operation)

A ventilated area is not acceptable or full protection against the dangers of second-hand smoke although businesses may see some potential benefits in improving ventilation.

The website will be Hertfordshire wide and accessible both as a stand-alone site and also linked from the busy web sites that each local council has in place. This is the first site of its kind in Britain so it should receiveplenty of publicity. Restaurants, pubs, tearooms etc. will be able to describe their food business and what they have on offer, and will be able to include 2 digital photographs. In addition the site gives information about whether the premises are child friendly or accessible for disabled people. There will be NO CHARGE for this service and you can join the website at any time.

The search facility will find premises by category (cafe/hotel etc) and by location.
