Harpenden Health Walks Programme

The Health Walks programme specifically designed for the Harpenden area. These walks are supported by your local doctors so why not join us ?

The majority of walks in the programme start from Harpenden. However, we have been exploring further afield. Each of the walks listed is led by two people from the local area. These volunteers have undertaken training to safeguard your welfare during your walk. We are currently looking for more walk leaders. If you are interested in becoming involved in this scheme or would like more information please call the number below.

For bus times please call Interlink Traveline on 0870 608 2608. Alternatively speak to fellow walkers about possible car sharing.

To ensure that you make the most of your walk please take note of the following:

  • For your own safety you should follow the leaders instructions at all times.
  • Leaders will be at the meeting point whatever the weather, but may cancel the walk if conditions are hazardous.
  • Please wear comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes.
  • Depending on the weather you may also wish to bring waterproofs or a sun hat.
  • Carrying a drink.
The first time you attend a walk you will be requested to complete a simple 'ready to exercise?' form, the information you give is completely confidential within the scheme but necessary to ensure your safety.

You may be asked to see your doctor, he/she should be aware of the healthy walking scheme and able to advise you of the best walk.

  • Walking is fun.
  • Meet people and make new friends.
  • Walking is the best kind of exercise there is.
It can reduce the risks of:
  • Heart disease;
  • Stroke;
  • High blood pressure;
  • Osteoporosis;
  • Bowel and colon cancer;
  • Becoming depressed;
  • Diabetes;
  • and even Alzheimer's disease;
The list goes on.

Walking can increase your confidence and stamina, improve your balance and co-ordination and generally keep you fit. It can help to keep you slim or lose weight and looking good. It costs nothing and is available to everybody. And it does no harm to the environment.

BUT MOST OF ALL IT'S FUN.

There are many other opportunities for walking in the countryside. If you are interested in guiding yourself around a walk there are a number of leaflets available contact 01992 555262 For further information.

If you do not live in the Harpenden area there are other opportunities for guided walks call 01992 555262 and ask for a copy of Walks and More, a calendar of events in Hertfordshire which includes both short and longer walks led by knowledgeable people.

If you, a neighbour or a member of your community would like this leaflet produced in another language or format (e.g. audio cassette), please contact the Countryside Management Service on 01727 848168.
