  Applying For Housing

  * Housing Register

People who are not yet Council tenants can go on a waiting list, known as the Housing Register. Their application will be prioritised by a points scheme, agreed by the Council, to balance need against waiting time.

  * Retirement Housing

Retirement housing provides accommodation for people aged 55 or older, although certain applicants over the age of 50 may be considered. Residents must be able to live independently. The accommodation is designed so that each resident can retain their independence and freedom.

  * Local Housing Associations

A number of Local Housing Associations also have properties throughout the St Albans District. St Albans Council has nomination rights to a number of these properties. This means that we can put forward households from our Housing Register and Transfer lists and ask the Housing Association to offer them a tenancy.

Acrobat icon Homelessness Strategy

This Homelessness Strategy is the result of the Homelessness Act 2002 which achieved royal assent in February of that year. It first explains the aims of the council in forming the strategy and goes on to explain why homelessness occurs and the various ways in which it may be prevented.

The Homelessness Service for the St Albans City and District area is examined in this audit. The audit is divided into four areas and covers current trends, temporary accommodation, partnership working and consultation arrangements.

  * Stort Valley Homebuy scheme
    Under the Homebuy scheme run by Stort Valley Housing Association Tenants of a housing association or local authority may be offered an interest free loan of 25% towards the purchase of a property, freeing their present home for social housing. This loan would be repayable when the property is sold.

Applicants that are not currently in a Local authority or housing association accommodation may also apply for the scheme but allocations are very limited and preference will go to existing tenants. Please contact Stort Valley on 01279 714714 For more information on the Homebuy. A leaflet is also available in pdf format by clicking on the link below.
