Under the Controlled Waste Regulations 1992, the district Council has a duty to collect clinical waste from a domestic property, which includes a caravan.
The Councils contractors, currently Enterprise MRS, arrange for the separate weekly collection of clinical waste e.g. dialysis waste, which is then disposed of by incineration. The weekly collections are free of charge.
The Collection of Sharps (needles/syringes etc)
It is essential that sharps are not allowed to be put in with the household refuse as they may seriously injure the collection or disposal operatives.
St Albans District Council offer a collection service to domestic properties for sharps presented in proper containers (yellow sharps bin). These containers should be provided by the GP or hospital clinic responsible for prescribing the injectable medication to the patient. Arrangements can then be made through the Council for the free collection of the sharps container when full. Any replacement sharps bin should be provided by the GP or hospital clinic and not the Council. The Council will however provide a sharps bin free of charge in an emergency if a resident has sharps, but no container.
If you have sharps under a local needle exchange scheme, then please continue with the current arrangements with your participating pharmacy.
NB The Council does not collect Clinical Waste from commercial or industrial premises - This service is for domestic customers only.
