St Albans District Shopmobility Scheme

What is Shopmobility?

Shopmobility is a scheme which provides battery powered scooters, electric and manual wheelchairs to help people who have limited mobility, to get to all that St Albans City centre and the centre of Harpenden have to offer - from shops and banks to tourist and leisure attractions. Similar schemes operate in around 300 towns in the country.

Who is it for?

Anyone who has difficulty in getting around, through permanent or temporary disablement, illness, accident or age. You don't have to be a registered disabled person a regular wheelchair user or an blue badge holder.

Where are we?

The St. Albans Shopmobility office is situated on the ground floor entrance of the Drovers Way car park (off Catherine Street behind St. Peter's Street). The Harpenden office is situated at the rear of the Harpenden Methodist Church in the High St. and may be accessed from the Bowers Way car park.

How much does it cost?

There is no charge for the use of the scheme, however we do welcome donations to help us to meet the running costs, ensure its future success and enable us to extend the scheme so that more people can enjoy the freedom that Shopmobility gives them.

Opening Hours?

The scheme is open in St Albans from Tuesday to Friday between the hours of 09.30am and 4pm, and in Harpenden on Thursday and Friday between the hours of 09.30am and 4pm.

Advanced Booking

Customers can book in advance to reserve a scooter, electric or manual wheelchair. Ring 01727-819339.

Disabled Car Parking?

Reserved disabled car parking spaces are available next to the scheme's office in Drovers Way car park. A disabled "radar" toilet is nearby.

On the first visit customers will be asked for two items of identification (eg Driving licence, benefit book showing your name and address, medical card etc) to register with the scheme for insurance purposes. You will be given a registration card and number to use when you come along to borrow the equipment. A member of the staff will demonstrate the use of the equipment and when the customer is confident in its use they will be free to use the vehicles to visit the city centre shops and facilities. At the end of the visit, you simply return the scooters or chairs to the Shopmobility office.

Shopmobility Staff

The scheme is coordinated by a part-time officer and volunteers provide the practical daily work. Please contact the Shopmobility co-ordinator on 01727 819267 or e-mail k.darvell@stalbans.gov.uk if you would like to know more about the scheme, or if you would like to volunteer your help.
