St Albans is well served by public transport. This page provides further information to help you discover and use your local public transport facilities. Children love buses and trains so why not use them for days out as well as daily trips.

The Council is working closely with the County Council, bus and rail providers to provide a more integrated and reliable public transport system for St Albans. Further information about the partnership and public transport services can be found on the dedicated Network St Albans website. 

Bus Travel

Bus map St Albans City Centre is well connected on the local bus network with services from North London, Welwyn Garden City, Hatfield, Luton and Watford, as well as routes to the city’s suburbs and outlying shopping areas. 

A simple to read, pocket size map of the bus network has been produced by the Network St Albans partnership and is available to download below. You can also collect your copy from the Tourist Information Centre (closed Sunday) or the District Offices (closed weekends).

Hertfordshire County Council subsidises around 30% of local bus services to fill the gaps in the commercial network. County Council also: 

  • Run the bus pass scheme within the county
  • Provide school transport for eligible pupils
  • Fund the SaverCard scheme allowing 11 to 18 year-olds to travel half price
  • Maintain bus stops, shelters and rail/bus interchanges
  • Provide timetable and service information for passengers
  • Work with bus and rail operators to promote the use of public transport

Rail Travel

St Albans is just 20 minutes away from London’s St Pancras International Station on the Thameslink train line. This line also connects to a variety of other London stations such as West Hampstead (London Overground and Jubilee Line); Kentish Town (northern line) and Farringdon (Metropolitan, Circle, Hammersmith and City lines). St Albans also connects to Gatwick airport (1 hour 15 mins) and Brighton (2 hours) in the south and London Luton Airport and Bedford to the north. 

In addition to the main rail station, St Albans is also served by the Abbey Line, which connects St Albans to Watford.
