The main works on the M1 started on Monday 20th March 2006 and is expected to last until December 2008.
Discussions are continuing with Highways Agency and their main contractor to minimize the disruption during local diversions. This is a complex piece of works but in view of the importance of these Hertfordshire Highways is closely liaising with all the interested parties.
Latest Closure Information - Junction 8 (Breakspear Way) closure Programme
This is the last planned Major Road Closure for bridge demolition works over the M1.
The date for demolition is between 20.00hrs on 15th March to 14.00hrs on 16th March 2008.
Diversion: During this period the M1 will be closed in both directions. All M1 southbound traffic will be diverted off the M1 at J9 and diverted via A5183, B487, A414, A41, M25 J20, M25 J21A to M1 J6.
All M1 northbound traffic will be diverted off the M1 at J8 via A414 Breakspear Way, Green Lane Roundabout and return back onto M1 via J8 northbound entry slip road.
In addition, there will be no access to the M1 at J8 from A414.
The A414 eastbound will be closed at Maylands Avenue roundabout. Traffic wishing to travel north on the M1 will be directed to M1 J9.
Traffic wishing to travel south on the M1 will be directed via A41 to M25 J20, then M25 J21A and M1 J6.
In addition, there will be a weekend closure of the M1 Junction 8/ A414 Breakspear Way from 2200hrs on 7th March to 0500hrs on 10th March 2008
This closure is required to allow the new slip roads to be built at Junction 8 and to transfer traffic onto the new bridge. This will allow the existing J8 bridge to be prepared for demolition. All slip roads at Junction 8 will be closed.

Northbound - M1 traffic wishing to exit at M1 J8 will be diverted to M1J9, then A5183, B487.
Southbound – M1 traffic wishing to exit at J8 will need to exit at M1 J9 and use A5183, B487 or continue to M1 J6A, then M25 J20, A41 and then Hemel Hempstead. |
Traffic wishing to access M1 at J8 to travel north will be directed from Maylands Avenue roundabout to M1 J9.
Traffic wishing to access M1 at J8 to travel south will be directed via A414, A41, M25 J20, M25 J21A, and M1 J6.
The A414 eastbound will be closed from Maylands Avenue Roundabout to M1 J8. Access will be provided to the Shell and BP garages and the Holiday Inn.
Specific information leaflets for the bridge demolition and weekend closure will be produced by Highways Agency and circulated nearer the time. These will contain details of closure timings and the diversion routes that will be in operation. Plans will be available for inspection at Dacorum Civic Offices and St Albans District Offices.
