EastEnders’ star to switch on Christmas lights in St Albans

EastEnders’ star Steve McFadden, who plays Phil Mitchell, will join the Mayor to turn on the Christmas Lights in St Albans on Sunday 16 November.

Steve will take to the stage in St Peter’s Street for the 5pm switch-on with fellow cast members from the Alban Arena panto, Jack and the Beanstalk. Among them will be CBeebies presenter Rebecca Keatley, ‘Morecambe’ actor Bob Golding and Jemma Carlisle.

An afternoon of festive fun, organised by St Albans City and District Council will lead up to the lights switch-on. There will be live music and entertainment, food and gift stalls, seasonal refreshments and a fun fair. A Santa’s Grotto will be provided by the Rotary Club of St Albans Verulamium.

A programme of live entertainment will run from 12 noon on two stages, the main stage in St Peter’s Street and another acoustic stage in Market Place. Performances will be provided by Excel Performing Arts, St Albans’ Rock Choir, Hertfordshire 80s band Our Friends Electric and singer Ricky Lopez, among others.

Cllr Geoff Harrison, Mayor of St Albans City and District, said: “Come down to St Peter’s Street on Sunday 16 November and join in the fun at the spectacular St Albans’ Christmas lights switch-on. There will be a packed programme of entertainment for the family to enjoy before the panto stars join me on stage to turn on the lights.”

Cllr Beric Read, Portfolio Holder for Community Engagement and Localism at St Albans City and District Council, said: “The Christmas lights switch-on is not to be missed as it kicks off the festive season in St Albans. It is one of the many events organised by the Council with the aim of supporting the local economy by attracting visitors to the City centre.”

Radio Verulam will support the event broadcasting throughout the day and will be providing the compere for the main stage.
