Winners of St Albans Retailer of the Year 2015 unveiled at gala night

An independent coffee shop, a wholefood market stall and a fancy dress shop are among the winners of St Albans Retailer of the Year Awards 2015.

The winners and runners-up were announced at the Gala Awards Evening at Club Batchwood on Monday 22 June.

The overall winner was D. Copperfield of Chequer Street. The Mayor of St Albans City and District, Cllr Salih Gaygusuz, presented the prize to the team behind the men’s clothes shop.

The awards celebrate the diverse and vibrant shopping experience that St Albans offers to residents and visitors. 
The organisers included Chair, Cllr Roma Mills, St Albans City and District Council and St Albans & Harpenden Review newspaper. Also represented are St Albans Civic Society and St Albans District Chamber of Commerce. 

Local residents nominate their favourite retailers in a number of categories: Hair and Beauty, Specialist Shops, Fashion and Accessories, Cafes, Restaurants, Market Traders and Neighbourhood Shops.

Mystery shoppers visit the retailers and a shortlist is compiled for each of the competition categories. A panel of judges selects the final winners.

The winners of the Festive Pub of the Year and Festive Shop Window were also presented with their prizes at the event.

Overall Winner: Retailer of the Year 2015: D. Copperfield 

Hair and Beauty 
Category winner: Sanrizz, The Maltings  
• Runners-up: Greys Hairdressing, Christopher Place; Sarah Iovane, London Road; The Alternative Barbering Co., George Street; The Wacky Barber, Verulam Road; Wilde About Hair, French Row.

Category winner: Barrissimo, St Peter’s Street     
• Runners-up: Canteen, George Street; The Courtyard Café, Hatfield Road; Hatch, The Maltings; The Waffle House, St Michael’s Street; West Cornwall Pasty Co., Market Place.

Category Winner: Bar Espresso, Victoria Street  
• Runners-up: Côte, High Street; Dylans at the Kings Arms, George Street; Fishy Delishy, Catherine Street; Lussmanns, Waxhouse Gate; Nando’s, Chequer Street. 

Fashion & Accessories
Category winner: D. Copperfield, Chequer Street   
• Runners-up: H&M, The Maltings; Hobbs, Christopher Place; Jigsaw, St Peters Street; Long Tall Sally, George Street;  Waterers, The High Street.

Market Traders 
Category Winner:Sycamore Wholefoods  
• Runners-up: Card Stall Sisters; Chrissy’s Cupcakes; Poulters Fish; So Cosy; Tylers Fruit and Veg. 

Specialist Shops 
Category Winner:  Chloe James, High Street   
• Runners-up: A & C Meats, Catherine Street; Addiktion Cycles, Victoria Street; Chaos City Comics, Heritage Close; That Design Store, Market Place; Tomoko Spirits Boutique, Christopher Place.

Neighbourhood Shops
Category Winner: Funzone, High Oaks 
• Runners-up: Chestnut Professional Hairdressing, High Oaks; Mosaic Hair Studio, Marshalswick.

Star Award 2015:  Chaos City Comics, Heritage Close     

Festive Pub of the Year 2015: The Lower Red Lion, Fishpool Street 

Festive Shop Window 2015: Raindrops on Roses, High Street

Cllr Julian Daly, Leader and Portfolio Holder for Planning and Conservation, St Albans City and District Council, said: “St Albans has a wealth of different retailers providing good customer service and choice. The Retailer of the Year Awards help celebrate this diversity and creativity. The awards also recognise the contribution these businesses play in providing the varied shopping experience that helps attract visitors to St Albans. The awards contribute to the Council’s strategy of supporting local businesses and developing the local economy.”
