Our waste and recycling services

We’d like St Albans District to be a shining example of community recycling. Together with our partner Veolia, our aim is to increase recycling rates in the District to more than 60%.

Below, you can find information for residents who live in either houses or flats to tell you about our services, together with Frequently Asked Questions with lots more detailed information.

About your collections

Household refuse (brown bins or purple bags) is collected on the alternate week to your black & green wheeled bins and paper box. Food waste is collected every week, as are textiles and small electrical items. The district is divided into two collection rounds

Those properties not suitable for wheeled bins are issued with purple refuse sacks and are limited to 3 sacks per fortnight. These provide the same capacity as the wheeled bin used by a majority of households. No excess waste will be collected so please ensure all your refuse is in the brown wheeled bin/purple sacks provided.

Residents must place their containers at the boundary of their property on collection day by 7am.

Those residents, who because of age or disability, cannot move their refuse to the boundary are asked to contact us on 01727 809019 to ask for an assisted collection.

Families with six or more full time permanent residents can apply for extra capacity.

If your bin is not collected please use the form to report this. Alternatively you can call 01727 809019 or email Please do not report a missed collection via multiple methods.

Any missed bin reports MUST be made within 2 working days of the collection in order for the contractor to return and collect the waste. Reports made after this time may not result in a collection.

You can also use these details to submit any comments you have regarding your collection service.
