Household waste recycling centres (tips/dumps)

There are three Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) in the St Albans District. They accept a wide range of materials for recycling and are for household waste only.

These sites are managed by Hertfordshire County Council and their contractors. If you have any enquiries relating to the HWRC please contact them on 0300 123 4051.

Some sites operate different summer and winter opening hours. Summer hours are from 1 April - 30 September and winter hours operate 1 October - 31 March.

The Council manages a number of recycling sites across the district for residents to use in addition to the kerbside collection service. Each site has containers provided based on need and space available so not all sites will have the same facilities available to recycle each material. Containers and the materials collected may be changed at any time by the Council if circumstances require it.

We are currently replacing a number of containers across the sites so there may not be a full compliment of containers available at this time. As such the below list of site information may be incorrect until the containers are all replaced. We apologise for any inconvenience caused during this period and will install replacements as soon as they are available. Most of the materials collected at the recycling sites can however be recycled at home in your kerbside collection.

*The council does not operate the static recycling sites at Sainsburys; London Colney and Everard Close.

The recycling sites across the district are a very popular way of recycling. However, we are encountering the following problems:

  • Cardboard boxes being left on the ground - please check the whole container as there is often space available however,if the container is full please take your cardboard home with you to recycle it in your kerbside collections.
  • If any of the banks are full, please take your recycling home or to another site - do not put it on the ground.
  • Carrier bags that are left at ANY of the static sites go to landfill.
  • People leaving items such as TV’s, ironing boards, lawn mowers, bathroom suites etc are FLY-TIPPING and liable for prosecution.
  • A number of the banks are not managed by St Albans Council, if there is a problem with one of these banks please use the contact details on the container to report it.
