Recycling Centres and Sites

Printer-friendly page

A Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) is a place where you can go to recycle a wide range of materials from your home. We have three HWRC's in the St Albans District for residents to use. These are for household waste only.

The sites are managed by Hertfordshire County Council and their contractors (not the District Council). If you have any enquiries relating to a HWRC please contact them on the details below. Some sites operate different summer and winter opening hours so check before you travel. Summer hours are from 1 April - 30 September and winter hours are 1 October - 31 March.

For enquiries relating to the HWRC's contact Wasteaware on 0300 123 4051 or visit www.wasteaware.org.uk

Recycling Banks

The Council manages a number of recycling sites across the district for residents to use. We provide containers based on the need and space available so not all sites will have the same facilities available to recycle each material. The Council reserve the right to change the containers or the materials collected at any time, if required.

We are currently replacing a number of containers across the sites so there may not be a full compliment of containers available at this time. As such the below list of site information may be incorrect until the containers are all replaced. We apologise for any inconvenience caused during this period and will install replacements as soon as they are available. Most of the materials collected at the recycling sites can however be recycled at home in your kerbside collection.

Recycling Banks Table

The recycling sites across the district are a popular way of recycling. However, we are encountering the following problems:

  • Cardboard boxes being left on the ground - please check the whole container as there is often space available however,if the container is full please take your cardboard home with you to recycle it in your kerbside collections.
  • If any containers are full, please take your recycling home or to another site - do not put it on the ground.
  • Carrier bags that are left at ANY of the static sites go to landfill.
  • People leaving items such as TV’s, ironing boards, lawn mowers, bathroom suites etc are FLY-TIPPING and liable for prosecution.
  • A number of the banks are not managed by St Albans Council, if there is a problem with one of these banks please use the contact details on the container to report it. We do not operate the static recycling sites at Sainsbury's; London Colney and Everard Close.
