Renting council garages

Printer-friendly page

The Housing service owns and manages garages on a number of sites and rents these out to private residents as well as to council tenants and leaseholders.

There are two garage sites managed by our Property & Asset Management Team within Community Services - Gombards and Russell Avenue. If you are interested in either of these two sites please contact them on 01727 819516.

For all other sites you can apply online through your MyStAlbans account

Where are the garages situated?

We have a number of different garage sites spread across the District. Please see the list below for details of their locations, or you can view the garage sites on Google Maps

How much do they cost?

The weekly rental charge for a garage will be:

Council Tenants    £11.30

Private Tenants    £13.56

Leasehold Tenants  £11.30

Council tenants and (in some circumstances) council leaseholders do not pay VAT but private residents should pay VAT. At present the weekly VAT charged is £2.26

Rent is charged over 50 weeks with a two week rent free period in December.

Rent is paid weekly, one week in advance. We advise that you make monthly payments via direct debit.

How can I pay?

Ideally you will pay for the garage by Direct Debit - if this is not possible you can pay using the following methods:

  • Debit/credit card over the phone via the automated payment service - (0161) 7853880. Please press the * key and then follow Option 2 remembering to quote your 8 digit reference number.
  • Please note that if your reference number is 6 digits, place 00 in front of the reference number and if your reference number is 7 digits, place 0 in front of your reference number.
  • You can pay in person at the Civic Centre, however, you cannot pay in cash at the Civic Centre.  If you wish to pay in cash you will need to take your payment card to a post office and pay over the counter.
  • By cheque, writing your garage address and tenancy number on the back. This can be posted to us or handed in to us.

How can I apply for a garage?

- Apply online through your MyStAlbans account

My St Albans District Account
Log in or sign up here.

Once received we will review your application and if there is a garage available in your area of choice you will be offered this within 5 working days, if on review we do not have a garage in your area immediately you will be added to the waiting list and sent a letter to confirm this. You do not have to accept any garage you are offered and you will be put back on the waiting list.

Please note council tenants and wherever possible, residents living in the vicinity of any garage site, will be given priority during the offering process.

NOTE: If you are a Council Tenant and your rent account is in arrears or have any former tenant arrears, you will not be considered for a garage.

If you cannot access the internet to set up a MyStAlbans account - you will need to contact our office to discuss alternate ways to apply. Please see our contact details below.

What do I do when I no longer wish to continue renting a council garage?

There is a one week notice period on all tenancies.  All tenancies end on a Sunday therefore if a key is received on a Wednesday that tenancy would end for example a week and half later.

The termination can be completed in several ways.  By downloading the document below and emailing it back to us at, by printing the form below and posting back or returning to us here at the offices. Alternatively you can come to the offices to complete one here direct. The tenancy will not be able to be terminated however until your keys have been returned to us.

Any garage keys returned in the post must be sent in a secure manner such as special or recorded delivery, any loss will be the liability of the outgoing tenant and you will have to pay for the lock on the garage to be changed. It is your responsibility to ensure the keys reach us.

Download Termination of Garage Notice.
