Highway Tree Removal
St Albans City & District Council carries out a three-year cycle of safety inspections on highway trees, on behalf of Hertfordshire County Council.
Trees that are dead, dying, or structurally unsafe may need to be removed to protect people and property. In most cases, the stump is left at about one metre high to ensure visibility, and is removed separately—usually within a month.
We may also remove trees that obstruct roads, reduce visibility (as a last resort) or that are causing property damage.
Before any work begins, we check for nesting birds. If active nests are found, the work is delayed where it’s safe to do so.
Where possible, Hertfordshire County Council will plant a replacement tree in roughly the same location, typically during the winter planting season.
