100th birthday celebrations for two St Albans residents

Publication date:

Two local residents celebrating their 100th birthdays within days of one another have received a visit and a bouquet of flowers from the Mayor of St Albans.

The Mayor congratulated both Ethel Davey and Patricia Thomas on turning 100 years-old when he attended their birthday celebrations.

A birthday tea party was recently held for Ethel, who is believed to be Britain’s oldest charity shop volunteer, at the Duchess of Marlborough Almshouse, where she lives. The Mayor joined the birthday celebrations on Saturday 12 August along with fellow residents and the Clerk and Trustees from the Almshouse. He presented Ethel with a “Super Trouper” standard rose tree on behalf all her friends at the Almshouse, as well a bouquet of flowers. Ethel has been working as a charity shop volunteer at Scope in St Albans for the past 21 years and has no plans to retire. She actually turned 100 on Sunday 30 July, celebrating the event with
close family and friends.

Patricia Thomas, who was born the day after Ethel in 1917, celebrated her 100th birthday with her family on Sunday 30 July. The Mayor attended the birthday celebrations held at Tenterden House Care Home in St Albans and presented Patricia with a bouquet of flowers. Patricia also
celebrated with residents at the care home on the day of her birthday, on 31 July.

The Mayor of the City and District of St Albans, Councillor Mohammad Iqbal Zia, said: “I was honoured to attend Ethel and Patricia’s 100th birthday celebrations and congratulate them on reaching this special milestone. It was really interesting talking to both of these wonderful women about their lives and how life in St Albans has changed over the years.”
