Four 2025 Green Flag awards for outstanding parks and open spaces

Publication date:

Four Green Flag awards have been won by St Albans City and District Council in recognition of its outstanding parks and open spaces.

The Green Flag, an international quality mark, was given to Verulamium Park, Clarence Park and Hatfield Road Cemetery.

Verulamium Park was also awarded Green Heritage Site Accreditation, supported by Historic England, for the excellent management of its ancient Roman features.

The annual Green Flag Award scheme recognises and rewards well-managed parks and open spaces, setting the benchmark for green spaces across the United Kingdom and the world.

Councillor Helen Campbell, Chair of the Council’s Public Realm Committee and Lead for Parks, said:

I’m thrilled that once again, we have been given four Green Flags, retaining those we won last year.

My thanks go to our hard-working and dedicated parks and green spaces team along with our grounds maintenance contractor John O’Conner.

These awards demonstrate our commitment to providing our residents with wonderful places where they can enjoy the great outdoors, exercise or meet up with friends and family.

Green Flag Award Scheme Manager, Paul Todd, said:

Congratulations to everyone involved in St Albans DIstrict who have worked tirelessly to ensure that it achieves the high standards required for the Green Flag Awards.

Quality parks and green spaces like Verulamium Park, Clarence Park and Hatfield Road cemetery make the country a heathier place to live and work in, and a stronger place in which to invest.

These are vital green space for communities to enjoy nature, and during the ongoing cost of living crisis, it is a free and safe space for families to socialise.

They also provide important opportunities for local people and visitors to reap the physical and mental health benefits of green space.

Elsewhere in the District, Harpenden Common and Lydekker Park – both owned by Harpenden Town Council – were also awarded Green Flags.

Jersey Farm Woodland Park, owned by Sandridge Parish Council, was awarded the Green Flag Community Award.

The Green Flag Award scheme is managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government.

Any green space that is freely accessible to the public is eligible to apply for a Green Flag Award.  Awards are given on an annual basis and winners must apply each year to renew their Green Flag Award status

The Council has been receiving Green Flags for well over a decade. More information about the scheme is available here.
