Join the Great British September Clean

Publication date:

Issued on behalf of Veolia: St Albans City and District Council and their waste contractor Veolia are inviting residents and community groups to get involved in this year’s national campaign dedicated to tidying up local areas.

As part of Keep Britain Tidy’s Great British September Clean, local community groups can host or join clean ups and litter picks in their local area.

Running between Friday 11 and Sunday 27 September, the events are a great way to help the environment and make friends.

Keep Britain Tidy usually hold a Spring Clean, but it was postponed because of the national lockdown.

They have now issued new guidance which Veolia, the council’s recycling, waste and street cleansing contractor, and the Council will be providing to volunteers to support their litter picking efforts in the safest way possible.

Veolia will provide groups running litter picks with the kit they need, including litter pickers and rubbish bags. Veolia’s waste team will the collect the waste and equipment afterwards.

Please contact the Veolia team via uk.veolia.waste.sadc.mailbox@veolia.com to check for availability and arrange a waste collection.

Groups completing litter picks are encouraged to share their before and after pictures with the council on Twitter by tagging @StAlbansCouncil, and the Council will then share the pictures on the Council’s account, using #GBSeptCleanSADC. We’re certainly looking forward to hearing about how much litter the volunteers have collected.

Councillor Anthony Rowlands, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Heritage and Public Realm, said:

We are delighted to be taking part in the Great British September Clean along with our waste contractor Veolia.

This is a great cause as it encourages people to join together with others in their community to improve their immediate environment.

Lee Myers, Contract Manager for Veolia said:

Veolia’s street cleansing teams work hard to keep the District clean and make it an enjoyable place to live and visit. There are lots of volunteers who take pride in where they live and do amazing work by litter picking and looking after their area all year long and especially for events like the Great British September Clean.

We want them to feel valued, that’s
why we are always happy to support community litter-picking initiatives, by providing equipment and collecting bags of waste.
