Mayor takes part in St Albans Half Marathon

Publication date:

St Albans Mayor, Councillor Anthony Rowlands, was one of around 2,000 people who took part in the 41st St Albans Half Marathon.

It was the 39th time that Cllr Rowlands has completed the event which started and finished in Verulamium Park on Sunday 11 June.

More than 5,000 runners and walkers took part in the day’s activities which also included a five kilometre race and a family fun run.

Cllr Rowlands has made All Ages Together the theme of his civic year with the aim of improving social inclusion, accessibility and wellbeing across the generations.

He said after the 13 mile run which took place on one of the hottest days of the year:

That was one of the toughest runs I can remember!

I would particularly like to thank the hundreds of volunteer marshals, medical workers, highways staff, police and scouts for making this event possible, with many working for hours in the intense heat.

The half marathon is one of the most popular community events held around the District and I am pleased to have supported it once again.

It was a terrific atmosphere and it was wonderful to see so many people of all ages and backgrounds enjoying themselves and taking part in such a healthy exercise.

This is one of those events that brings the whole community and all the generations together, so it is very much in keeping with my Mayoral theme of All Ages Together.

The St Albans Half Marathon is supported by St Albans City and District Council and organised by Active Training World. It aims to raise money for local charities and organisations as well as provide a great day out.
