St Albans Mayor helps Brownies earn special Challenge badge

Publication date:

Civic history was on the agenda when the 21st St Albans Brownies met the Mayor of St Albans City and District last week.

The Brownies learned about local democracy and the ceremonial role of Mayor when they visited the offices of St Albans City and District Council.

They are working on a Challenge badge to celebrate 100 years since all men over 21 and women over 30 won the right to vote in the UK.

The Mayor of the City and District of St Albans, Councillor Mohammad Iqbal Zia, said: “The Brownies were really keen to find out about civic history and local democracy. We also had a great time discussing the ceremonial role of Mayor which involves chairing council meetings and attending events in the District. I explained that during my year in office I am also raising funds for my chosen charity Youth Talk through different events.”

Youth Talk provides a confidential counselling service for young people, aged 13 to 25, who live, work or are in education in St Albans District. More information is available at: www.youthtalk.org.uk.

The Brownies were also treated to a talk from the Mayor’s Macebearer, John Hills, about the history of the Mayor’s robes and regalia.

Helen Paustian, Leader of 21st St Albans Brownies, said: “The girls were really interested in meeting the Mayor and they had a great time learning about civic history, democracy and the Mayor’s duties. It was encouraging to hear just how many women in recent years have been Mayors for St Albans City and District.”

More information about the Mayor of the City and District of St Albans is available on the Council’s website.
