St Albans Mayor’s charity ball raises over £4K
The sum of £4,183 was raised for the charity Youth Talk at the Mayor of St Albans City and District’s Ball on Friday night.
Guests were treated to Asian-inspired food and a Bollywood-style dance performance at the fundraising event held at Sopwell Manor in Cottonmill Lane.
The event was attended by 185 guests, including Mayors and other dignitaries from across Hertfordshire.
Lord McNally, a former Minister of State for Justice and a Patron of Youth Talk, gave an after dinner speech celebrating the City of St Albans.
Guests then danced the night away to popular songs performed by Hertfordshire-based band Co Jones.
A raffle, tombola and silent auction were held during the evening to help raise funds for the charity.
The Mayor of the City and District of St Albans, Councillor Mohammad Iqbal Zia, said:
I want to thank everyone who supported the annual Civic Ball and helped raise funds for Youth Talk, my mayoral charity for the year. Youth Talk works tirelessly to help young people with social, emotional and educational needs by providing a much-needed confidential counselling and support service.
Youth Talk’s Chief Executive, Trevor Fromant, said:
We are grateful to everyone who came to the Mayor’s Civic Ball, helping to raise funds for our small, local charity. The charity provides a much-valued counselling service for young people who are distressed and in need of support emotionally. We are dependent on grants, the generosity of donors and proceeds from fund-raising activities like the Civic Ball to deliver this service.

Cllr Mohammad Iqbal Zia was made Mayor of the City and District of St Albans on 24 May 2017. The theme for his year in office is ‘Your Community – Our Community’. The Mayor has also chosen to support Youth Talk by raising funds for the charity during the year. The Mayor was born in Pakistan and emigrated to the UK in 1982. He currently works as a personal advisor to young people at Hertfordshire Youth Connexions.
