Still time left to give your views on local government reorganisation in Hertfordshire

Publication date:

Residents, businesses and community groups still have time to shape proposals for the reorganisation of local government in Hertfordshire.

They can complete a survey about the plans and give their views until midnight on Tuesday 30 September.

All this important feedback will help councils in Hertfordshire decide on the final proposal they will submit to Government later this year.

More information about options for reorganisation as well as how to forward views and undertake the survey are available here.

Councillor Paul de Kort, Leader of St Albans City and District Council, said:

This is the biggest shake-up of local government for 50 years, so it is vital residents have their say.

We want as much input as possible from our residents, so I urge them to get involved and have their voice heard by completing the survey.

The Government plans to end the two-tier system of local government that operates in many parts of the country including Hertfordshire.

Currently, there are two types of council including Hertfordshire County Council which provides services such as schools, roads and social care.

Additionally, there are 10 district and borough councils in Hertfordshire including St Albans City and District Council.

They are responsible for a separate set of services such as housing, planning, recycling, car parking and leisure facilities.

Under the Government’s plan, all these councils will be replaced by new unitary councils which will provide the full set of services.

Councils in Hertfordshire have been working together to consider what would be the best unitary system for the county.

Cllr de Kort said:

The overall aim is to create a new structure of local government that is easy to understand, delivers good value for money and responds to the needs of local people.

In order to fully appreciate what those needs are, we need to listen to residents and hear their thoughts. So, please take a few minutes to complete this survey and give your views.
