Tiffin Club members take tea with St Albans Mayor

Publication date:

Members of Saheli Tiffin Club learned about the role of the Mayor of St Albans City and District when they met her for tea on Monday 16 January.

Fourteen members of the women’s luncheon club took tea with the Mayor, Cllr Frances Leonard, in St
Albans City and District Council’s Chamber at the Civic Centre. They were also joined by members of
Hertfordshire Asian Women’s Association (HAWA), which is responsible for organising the club.

Official Macebearer, Mr John Hills, treated the visitors to a talk about the role of Mayor and the history behind the official robes worn for civic events.

Cllr Frances Leonard, the Mayor of the City and District of St Albans, said: “It was a real delight to meet so many members of the Tiffin Club and Hertfordshire Asian Women’s Association. We talked about the ceremonial role of the Mayor, representing the City and District Council locally, nationally and internationally at important events. Everyone also had great fun finding out about the Mayor’s robes and holding the heavy mace.”

The Saheli Tiffin Club is a weekly luncheon club for black, asian and ethnic minority women who also take part in exercise, literacy and numeracy classes together. Shahana Chowdhury from the Saheli Tiffin Club said:

“We really enjoyed meeting the Mayor and learning all about her role as the official representative of St Albans and the District Council. We now have a better understanding of the duties of Mayor in the community.”

The Chair of HAWA, Rushna Miah, said: “Thank you to the Mayor for inviting the ladies for tea and giving them the opportunity to learn about the history behind the role of the Mayor. Everyone had fun dressing up in the official robes and holding the Mayor’s heavy mace. Overall, it was a lovely
afternoon enjoyed by all.”
