Burials in the Muslim Section at London Road Cemetery

Our New Muslim graves are situated in Section FF in London Road Cemetery. All the graves are timber shored, allowing for one burial within each grave. Graves are mounded over and after settling, a sedum mat is placed over the grave. Headstones are permitted, with the correct permit application. All graves in this section are lawn graves, allowing for an upright headstone and a small garden kerb if desired. A flat square marker, no larger than 12” x 12” may be placed at the head of the plot without a permit.

Each grave has a single chamber constructed of the Timber Shoring, this allows for a shroud or coffin burial, where the deceased is laid on the earth and the wooden lintels laid over the chamber. This chamber is covered over with earth and mounded. The graves are oriented so the right-hand side of the grave plot faces East. The soil is placed next to the grave in order to allow mourners to backfill the grave, if they chose to do so. Our team can also assist with this.

Reservation of plots in the section is not possible as we cannot travel over graves in order to open a reserved grave.

We will carry out the burial as quickly as possible following a death. Burials are usually booked for 2pm providing the paperwork and fees are completed before 11am of the same working day.
Registration of the death will need to take place prior to any confirmation of burial. Registrar’s service can be contacted on 0300 123 4045 or via their Hertfordshire Registrars Services website.

Please contact our staff in the cemeteries office – cemeteries@stalbans.gov.uk or on 01727 819362 in order to book a burial. Our office is open Monday to Friday 9.00am – 4.00pm.

If a burial is required on a weekend or Bank Holiday (other than Christmas Day or Easter Sunday) please see the below details:

Please note bookings for out of hours burials can only be made between 9.00am and 11.00am, after this time bookings can only be made the following day.

In order to carry out a burial on a weekend or bank holiday you must first ensure you have completed the interment form and registered the death. Registration must be arranged through Hertfordshire Registration Service by contacting  0300 123 4045 or via the Hertfordshire Registrars Office website .

The registrar will issue a green certificate of burial or cremation. Without this legal document a burial cannot take place and often, the deceased cannot be taken into care from a mortuary. Once you have registered the death and completed the interment form, please email these to cemeteries@stalbans.gov.uk. Once you have emailed the documents please contact the Council as below.

Outside of our weekday office hours you may contact the Council on 01727 866100 (you will be connected to an operator following all given options). This line will only be available between 9.00am and 11am in the morning, you will not be able to speak to anyone regarding a burial outside of these hours on a weekend or bank holiday. If your paperwork is verified, your booking will be confirmed and our out of hours contractor will attend at the date and time arranged.

If there are any queries over the paperwork, the residency of the deceased or the certification we will not be able to carry out the burial until the next available working day and your enquiry will be forwarded onto the cemeteries office.
