Age Friendly St Albans District – everyone is welcome at our drop-in events

Publication date:

Three fun and informative drop-in events are to be held across St Albans District to celebrate Older Persons’ Day.

St Albans City and District Council has organised the events to help promote an Age Friendly District and highlight the contribution older people make to the community.

There will be opportunities to socialise and find out about services that keep older residents safe, connected and independent.

Anyone can pop along for a chat over a cup of tea at the events in St Albans, London Colney and Redbourn.

Council officers will be on hand to explain a range of services including housing and the welfare benefits older people may be entitled to.

Citizens Advice, Communities 1st, Age UK Herts and other groups who work with older people will be present.

Representatives from Hertfordshire Police and the Fire Service may be in attendance to talk about issues such as crime prevention.

Free refreshments will be provided by St Albans Old People’s Trust and there will be opportunities to take part in digital skills sessions and seated yoga.

Another activity on offer will be ‘Music For My Mind’ – a chance to create a playlist and learn about the transformative effects of music.

The events will take place at:

  • The Alban Arena, St Albans, Wednesday 22 October, 10am to 2pm

  • The Caledon Community Centre, London Colney, Monday 3 November, 10am to 2pm

  • Redbourn Village Hall, Thursday 13 November, 9.30am to 11.30am.

The International Day of Older Persons is celebrated around the world every year in October and is followed by weeks of special events.

Councillor Sarwar Shamsher, Lead for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, said:

It is important that we celebrate our older people and the contribution they make to our communities. These events are a great way of doing so.

We also want to make older people aware of all the services and opportunities available to them so that they can lead fulfilling lives and not become socially isolated.

These free, drop-in events offer information about how to participate in a range of social and fun activities. There will also be a chance to brush up on digital skills such as how to use a mobile phone or computer and to create your own playlist.

These are relaxed occasions. Everyone is welcome to drop in for a chat, discover new activities and discuss any issues they have.
