New community and cycling hub to open in St Albans

Publication date:

A brand new community centre is set to open in St Albans on Thursday 2 June. Cottonmill Community and Cycle Centre is managed by leisure operators Everyone Active in partnership with St. Albans City and District Council.

The centre will provide a hub for everyone in the local community to gather and enjoy the facilities. Along with a BMX pump-track and cyclo-cross track, the centre boasts an impressive cycle hub offering bike maintenance and repairs workshops, a wudu room (ablution facilities for Muslim prayer), function room and café. The centre will also act as a training facility for local cycling and triathlon clubs.

The local community will be able to experience all the fantastic new facilities from this Thursday when the centre opens its doors for the first time.

Steve Cox, contract manager at Everyone Active, commented:

This is a fantastic opportunity for the local community to come together and celebrate the new facilities that St Albans has to offer.

The new BMX track is the perfect place to learn bike control and also get together with friends. The cyclo-cross track allows users to enjoy off-road adventures in a specialised environment away from traffic.

What’s more, this is the first set of wudu facilities that have been made available in any community space in St Albans. These have been added for the ritual washing in preparation for Muslim prayer and worship

We’re sure these facilities will be enjoyed for many years to come.

Councillor Helen Campbell, Chair of the Public Realm Committee of St Albans City and District Council, added:

This is the culmination of our ambitious, multi-million pound project to replace the Marlborough Pavilion with a new community and cycling centre of the highest quality.

I am delighted that the doors of the main building have now opened following the opening of the pump and cyclocross tracks a few weeks ago.

Everything is now up and running and we will have an official launch later in the year, involving all those community groups and partner organisations who have helped bring this to fruition.

I believe we have created something really special - an outstanding, multi-purpose community facility that will be enjoyed by Sopwell and St Albans residents for years to come.
