Mayor joins Crucial Crew safety sessions for schools

Publication date:

Pupils from St Albans schools have been given tips on how to spot and deal with everyday dangers by acting out real-life scenarios at Crucial Crew safety events.

They have learned about personal and online safety and how to respond to hazards that can occur at home and outdoors, from house fires to flood water.

Over two weeks more than 1,170 children from 28 primary schools have attended a Crucial Crew session at St Albans Fire Station in London Road.

The Mayor of St Albans City and District, Councillor Mohammad Iqbal Zia, dropped by to see one of the Crucial Crew sessions on Monday 26 March.

The free sessions for pupils in Year 6 at local primary schools are run each year by members of St Albans Community Safety Partnership.

The school children were provided with strategies to deal with a range of situations including fires, intimidation from fellow pupils and cyber bullying.

Pupils have also taken part in scenarios that involve learning about road safety, first aid and the dangerous effects of alcohol.

Guiding the school children through different scenarios were representatives from Hertfordshire Constabulary, Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service and St Albans City and District Council. Students from Oaklands College also assisted in delivering sessions.

Representatives from The Samaritans were on hand to explain that people struggling to cope emotionally can talk in confidence to volunteers at the charity over the phone.

The Mayor of the City and District of St Albans, Councillor Mohammad Iqbal Zia, said: “Crucial Crew sessions provide young people with practical tools to deal with the dangers and emotional pressures that they can be exposed to in everyday life. I was amazed by how quickly they learned how to respond to various situations safely by taking on roles in real-life scenarios.”

This is the sixth year that St Albans Community Safety Partnership has run Crucial Crew for local schools in St Albans District.
