Queen’s Platinum Jubilee to be marked by street party in St Albans

Publication date:

A free street party is to be held in St Albans City Centre to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee during the June bank holiday.

More than 10,000 people are expected to attend the St Albans Platinum Party to mark Her Majesty’s 70 years of service as the Monarch.

Among the attractions will be live music and dozens of market stalls selling takeaway food and drink with plenty of outdoor seating for people to get together.

St Albans City and District Council is organising the community event scheduled for Thursday 2 June when the whole country is being encouraged to join together for the milestone celebrations.

The Platinum Party will be centred on St Peter’s Street, which will be closed to traffic, and run from 3pm to 10pm.

There will be an action-packed entertainment programme which will include something for people of all ages and celebrate the diverse society the UK has become during the Queen’s reign.

Children’s activities will include games, face painting, circus skills workshops and a magic show.

The fun event will culminate with a beacon lighting at 9.15pm. Around the same time, some 1,500 other beacons will be lit at major cities and other locations, including Buckingham Palace, in the UK and overseas territories.

Councillor Mandy McNeil, Lead Councillor for Community Engagement, said:

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee is an historic occasion which will be celebrated throughout the year.

The main focus, though, is on the special four-day Bank Holiday in June when a multitude of events both national and local will be taking place.

We couldn’t let the moment pass without organising an exciting event that will bring our whole community together and provide us all with some very happy memories.

St Albans Platinum Party will do just that and I’m sure people will turn out in force with friends and family to make this a really special occasion. We are expecting at least 10,000 but hoping for many more.

We recognise, of course, that we have diverse communities within the District and we will be working as we finalise the entertainment to make sure we stage a truly inclusive event.

Residents can apply to host a Platinum Jubilee street party and find out more about what’s happening across the District at at www.stalbans.gov.uk/jubilee and www.enjoystalbans.com/jubilee/.

The Alban Street Festival, which normally takes place the day after the Alban Pilgrimage, is being replaced this year by the Platinum Party. It will return in 2023.

The Pilgrimage will be going ahead as usual this year on Saturday 25 June.
